  1. One focal point

    On a big screen the audience has seconds. Decide what they look at first, then make everything else quieter than it.

  2. Values before colour

    If the greyscale version reads, the colour version will too. Dark, mid and light masses are the skeleton of the image.

  3. Save your WIPs

    Graphics competitions routinely ask for work-in-progress shots as proof of authorship. Save stages as you go — recreating them later never looks convincing.
