Sections, contrast and build-ups: how a soundtrack is shaped so a demo has somewhere to arrive.

Arrange a track structure that supports a production.

  • sections
  • contrast
  • build-ups
  • duration budgeting
  • supporting the visuals

Lessons

  1. Tracks are sections

An intro states the mood, an A-section establishes it, a breakdown removes something, and a climax puts it all back. Naming your sections is most of arranging.

  2. Contrast makes energy

A loud section is only loud next to a quieter one. Plan the removal as carefully as the addition.

  3. Duration is a budget

A demo soundtrack usually has two to five minutes total. Deciding each section's length up front stops a track from sprawling.

Arrangement plan

Lay out at least four sections with durations. Include an intro and an outro, and keep the total between one and five minutes.
